Van der Poel ticks off Omloop Nieuwsblad on debut

In a masterclass of tactical timing and raw power, Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) claimed victory at the 2026 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, marking a spectacular debut in the Belgian season opener. The Dutch superstar secured the win with a signature solo attack on the iconic Muur van Geraardsbergen, crossing the finish line in Ninove well clear of his nearest rivals.

A Rare Debut Triumph

Van der Poel’s victory is particularly historic, as he became the first rider in 25 years to win the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on his maiden attempt. This rare feat, which echoes the achievement of Italian legend Michele Bartoli in 2001, underscores the immense difficulty of mastering the Omloop’s unique blend of tactical chaos and challenging Flemish terrain without prior experience.

Race Highlights

The 207km race from Ghent to Ninove lived up to its reputation as a "mini-Tour of Flanders," defined by treacherous cobbles, biting winds, and a series of crashes that thinned the field early on.

  • The Turning Point: The decisive selection formed on the Molenberg with approximately 43km remaining. Amidst the chaos of a crash that hindered several contenders, Van der Poel managed a "miracle save"—unclipping a foot to stay upright—before bridging across to an elite group that included Florian Vermeersch (UAE Team Emirates) and Tim van Dijke (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe).
  • The "Muur" Move: As the leaders hit the slopes of the Kapelmuur with 16km to go, Van der Poel unleashed a crushing acceleration. He quickly distanced his companions, cresting the summit alone with a significant advantage.
  • The Run-In: Despite the efforts of the chasers, Van der Poel’s lead swelled as he navigated the Bosberg and the final flat kilometers to Ninove. He eventually crossed the line 22 seconds ahead of the chasers.

Significance of the Win

With this victory, Van der Poel cements his status as the primary favorite for the upcoming Spring Classics, coming just weeks after he secured his record-breaking eighth Cyclo-cross World Championship title.

Reflecting on the race, Van der Poel noted the importance of his bike-handling skills:

"It was total chaos on the Molenberg. I don't know how I stayed upright, but once I was clear, I felt I had the legs to finish it on the Muur."

In the women's race, fellow Dutch rider Demi Vollering completed a Dutch "double" for the weekend, taking the victory ahead of Kasia Niewiadoma and Lorena Wiebes.
