Van der Poel Delivers Audacious 174km Solo Masterclass Ahead of World Champs
Mathieu van der Poel capped off his final preparations for the upcoming UCI Road World Championships in breathtaking style, launching an extraordinary 174-kilometre solo break on the final stage of the Tour de Luxembourg.
Despite insisting afterwards that the move was completely unplanned, the Dutch star rode clear early on the 177km stage from Mersch to Luxembourg-Limpertsberg and held off a concerted chase from the main peloton to seal a sensational victory.
An Accidental Masterclass
Van der Poel slipped away on an uncategorised climb just four kilometres after the flag dropped. What initially appeared to be a routine early move quickly transformed into a record-breaking effort, as the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider found himself completely isolated at the front of the race.
Rather than sitting up to await the chasing groups, Van der Poel settled into a relentless rhythm, treating the day as an intensive individual time trial.
"I have no idea - that wasn't the plan before the start," Van der Poel admitted in his post-race interview. "I just found myself clear right at the beginning of the race, so I simply rode at my own pace all day."
Initially expecting the rest of the field to reabsorb him, he reconsidered once the gap began to expand:
"At first, I thought the chasers would catch up. But I kept riding to my power meters, and the gap started growing again. That was when I decided to go all-out to the finish."
Holding off the Chase
Behind him, several WorldTour teams—including Soudal Quick-Step, Lidl-Trek, Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, and EF Education-EasyPost—attempted to coordinate a chase. However, Van der Poel maintained an advantage exceeding three minutes into the final 30 kilometres.
Although Mikkel Frølich Honoré (EF Education-EasyPost) managed to break away late in the day to narrow the deficit, Van der Poel crossed the finish line 1 minute and 4 seconds clear of the Dane.

The ride stands as the longest winning solo breakaway in top-tier professional cycling this century, surpassing Van der Poel's own 59km solo raid at the 2024 Paris-Roubaix.
World Championship Intentions
The performance provides a timely boost for the 2023 World Champion as he heads to Montréal, Canada, for the Road World Championships. Earlier in the week, Van der Poel had expressed caution regarding his form, having felt sluggish following a heavy block of altitude training in Spain.
"The last few days, I didn't really have the legs I wanted," Van der Poel noted. "I came straight from Spain and perhaps trained a little too hard. But today I felt incredible."
While he maintains that the demanding circuit in Montréal may be slightly too hilly for his characteristics, his display in Luxembourg sends a clear message to rivals ahead of Sunday's road race.
