Pogačar's Resilient Triumph: A Strade Bianche for the Ages

Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates-XRG secured his third Strade Bianche victory in a display of remarkable tenacity, overcoming a significant crash to claim the coveted title. The race, a testament to grit and skill, saw Pogačar conquer the Tuscan gravel roads, ultimately crossing the finish line solo in Siena's Piazza del Campo.

The Slovenian rider's path to victory was far from smooth. With approximately 50 kilometers remaining, a high-speed corner caused Pogačar to lose control, resulting in a heavy fall. Despite the impact, he managed to remount and rejoin the leading group, which included Tom Pidcock of Q36.5.

The decisive moment came on the Colle Pinzuto, the penultimate gravel sector. Pogačar, seemingly unfazed by his earlier crash, launched a powerful attack that Pidcock was unable to match. The British rider fought valiantly, but ultimately finished second, trailing Pogačar by 1 minute and 23 seconds.

Tim Wellens, Pogačar's teammate, secured the third spot on the podium. He had navigated through the fragmented peloton after the race was ignited by Pogačar and Pidcock's earlier acceleration on the Monte Sante Marie, 78 kilometers from the finish.

This third Strade Bianche title places Pogačar alongside Fabian Cancellara, each holding the record for most victories in this prestigious race. Consequently, one of the iconic gravel sectors will now bear Pogačar's name.

"The joy was present until I crossed the line. Now that the adrenaline has subsided, the pain is becoming more apparent, which is not ideal for a victory celebration," Pogačar commented following the race. "However, a win is a win, and I hope the injuries are superficial."

Regarding the crash, Pogačar explained, "I entered the corner with excessive speed, I believe. While I possess extensive knowledge of this race, having participated numerous times, miscalculations occur. I simply lost traction, and these incidents happen."

"Initially, I was uncertain of my condition, and the bike sustained damage, requiring a replacement. I was concerned, as crashes take a toll on the body. Yet, I retained sufficient strength to complete the race," he concluded.
